Search Engine Terminology

See your website through the eyes of a search engine spider

Website publishers (or webmasters) are making thousands if not millions of dollars every using advertising on their website such Google Adsense.    Our company has in the past made over $28,000 in one year doing nothing but advertising on Google's Adsense.   Some websites are pulling in that much and more per month.  The secret is that you have to have a high traffic website and give people a good reason to click on your ads, which means the page must be relevant.

It's far too easy to give up too much information in an attempt to qualify your pages for good click out rate.  You have to have balance between content (but not too much!) and relevancy.

Live and Learn!  Google's Parked Domain Ad Serving

What happened here blew me away.  Google is all about relevance and getting to the answers or products you're looking for.  I parked about 90 domains on Google's Adsense for Domains.  I left the pages up for a couple months and saw zero return.  Here are a couple of reasons why:

  • They automatically generate a "no index" meta tag.  Which means the search engines will most likely ignore your domain and thus not list it in search results.

Then the only way you can be found is if someone specifically types in your domain name.  Yeah... that might work well for wallstreet.com.  Unless your domain name is a branded product or service, you're doomed.  And besides that, if you are THAT branded, you probably won't be serving ads.

  • Yep, you get a FULL page of pretty ads in a nice format.  But then you start clicking on the text ads and you end up at another page of ads, then click again, another page of ads.  I NEVER once got to the product I was looking for.  It's a never ending loop of ads!  This may behoove Google, but definitely NOT you , nor the advertiser.

AND SO, if you really want to park a domain, go ahead but be aware that the web hosting company may serve ads on that page without you knowing they are going to do it.  The best thing to do is just cough up the $$ to host and build the website, THEN put Google Adsense on them (That is, IF Google accepts you in the Adsense program... It's getting harder as time goes on..)

I gave trafficclub a try and found that I'm better off just developing the domain with real content and adding adsense rather than just parking the domain and serving ads via a company who specializes in parked domains.   The only way this works is you have a domain name that is popular enough to be typed in specifically by URL.  If you do have a domain name this popular, you are better off developing the website and serving Google ads on them.  This way, you only share your adsense income with Google rather than another third party.

What percentage does Google take from your ads?  Only specific people at Google know this.  And does it work on a "tiered" level?  For instance, do you make less per click if you have a highly clicked ad, or more?  I've seen times where I've sold domains and lost some adsense revenue for that website, but the other websites still left on adsense, seem to make a little more than they used to, taking up a bit of the "slack".  This leads me to believe that they want to continue to give you a good reason to keep those ads up there.  If you have very little return, you'll probably take their ads off and replace them with another companies ads.

Having said all the above... It still doesn't hurt to try anything once.. so to speak.

:-)
